Ann Coulter Cancels Controversial Berkeley Speech

April 26, 2017

Conservative personality Ann Coulter canceled her University of California-Berkeley speech that was planned for Thursday afternoon after a dispute with school officials who feared violent protests would ensue.

Coulter was scheduled to give a critical speech on pro-immigration policies at Berkeley's campus. Last week, school officials claimed there was not a safe venue for Coulter to give her speech on campus.

"There will be no speech," Coulter emailed Reuters. "I looked over my shoulder and my allies had joined the other team."

Young America's Foundation and the Berkeley College Republicans, the organizers of the speech, sued university officials after they initially canceled Coulter's address. The conservative groups accused Berkeley of suppressing conservative speakers' rights to free speech.

Young America's Foundation said, "Berkeley should be ashamed for creating this hostile atmosphere" later that day, stating they could no longer sponsor the speech.

Berkeley suggested the conservative commentator could speak at the school on May 2 but Coulter was unavailable that date.
