U.S. Officials 'Really Don't Have A Clue' About Islamic State Finances

CNN's Drew Griffin said that U.S. officials "really don't have a clue" about how much money the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant is raking in daily.

"The U.S. Treasury tries to track this--they believe it's about a million dollars a day coming in," Griffin told CNN host Ashleigh Banfield. "But when you start asking the follow-up questions, they really don't have a clue."

Griffin said the criminal nature of ISIL, combined with a lack of intelligence personnel on the ground in Iraq and Syria, has complicated the U.S. government's assessment of ISIL's finances.

"That's because so much of this is built on crimes, thuggery, taking over of property, that they don't really have a handle on it," Griffin said. "We don't have people on the ground, we don't have the human intelligence telling us this."
