The United States has not decided whether it will send lethal aid to the Syrian rebels, the State Department's Patrick Ventrell said Friday.
"We haven't made a decision one way or another on lethal aid to the Syrians," Venrell said. "We continue to ramp up and are on an upward trajectory with nonlethal assistance."
Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel confirmed on Thursday that the White House is reconsidering its opposition to arming the anti-Assad forces.
Hagel's comments came after reports that chemical weapons have been used in Syria, representing a crossing of a "redline" that the Obama administration has repeatedly said would warrant further US action.
The United Nations estimated in February that over 70,000 people have been killed in Syria's civil war.
