State Department spokeswoman Marie Harf released a statement Thursday regarding the death of an American citizen killed in Benghazi.
"We can confirm that a U.S. citizen was shot and killed in Benghazi," Harf said. "We offer our condolences to the victim’s loved ones. We are in contact with the family and are providing all appropriate consular assistance. Out of respect for the privacy of those affected, we have no further comment at this time. For questions on the investigation, I refer you to the Libyan authorities.
The American citizen, who had been working at an international school, was shot and killed Thursday morning, according to Fox News.
He was due to return to the United States for the holidays in a few days.
So far, no one has claimed responsibility for his murder, but there are suspicions that Islamic militants were behind the attack.
Benghazi made headlines last year when four Americans were killed in a terrorist attack at the U.S. consulate. Islamist group Ansar al-Sharia has been blamed for that attack.
