Officials: Bombers Eyed Second Attack in NYC

Plan was 'aspirational at most,' officials say

The Boston Marathon bombers planned to detonate what remained of their bombs in Times Square, the living suspect has told investigators.

Dzhokhar Tsarnaev originally said he and his brother intended to go to Manhattan "to party," but upon further questioning, now says they had discussed a second attack, NBC reports:

Senior law enforcement officials cautioned to NBC News that the idea was undeveloped. One senior official described the plan as "aspirational at most."

The brothers’ discussion appeared to be spontaneous and happened last Thursday night, after the brothers carjacked an SUV and before a shootout with suburban Boston police, New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said. At that time, they had one pressure-cooker bomb and five pipe bombs, he said.

The brothers’ plans were interrupted only because they realized the SUV was low on gas, Kelly said.
