Obama Rejects Calls for Special Counsel

Supported Special Counsels to Investigate Bush

The Obama administration continues to rebuff Republican calls for a special counsel to investigate the recent spate of national security leaks, despite Obama’s enthusiasm for a thorough investigation of scandals during the Bush administration.

The Hill reports:

Obama signed onto a 2006 letter with 36 Democratic senators led by then Minority Leader Harry Reid (R-Nev.) calling for the Bush Justice Department to appoint a special counsel to investigate the Jack Abramoff corruption scandal.

"A special counsel will ensure the public’s confidence in the investigation and prosecution and help to restore its faith in our government," the senators wrote.

Now, however, Obama is happy to leave the investigation in the hands of two prosecutors appointed by Attorney General Eric Holder, who will share their findings with Congress, "as appropriate."

Sen. John McCain is expected to introduce a Senate resolution calling for a special counsel investigation tomorrow.
