New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson said Saturday she is proud of the newspaper's coverage of super PAC donations, "especially considering Watergate history."
JILL ABRAMSON: On these shores, I’m tremendously proud of all the enterprise stories we’ve done on the super PACs and the billionaires behind them. Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers may be the most important behind-the-scenes players in this election. Especially considering Watergate history, an environment where there are giant, secret campaign contributions is ripe for even more investigations.
In her speech, Abramson did not mention the Obama campaign's largest donor, Jeffrey Katzenberg, who is currently under SEC investigation for allegedly bribing Chinese officials in a bid to gain access to China's film industry. The Times has provided only minimal coverage of Katzenberg's questionable dealings with China's "Princelings," and no mention is made of his connections to the Obama campaign, despite Vice President Joe Biden's involvement in the China deal.
Abramson was speaking at the Investigative Reporters and Editors conference in Boston; full video of her speech at the event can be seen via IRE.
