More than 12,500 Dead Pigs Found in Shanghai River

More than 12,500 dead pigs were found in the waters near Shanghai, China, contaminating drinking water to the city’s 23 million residents, the Associated Press reports:

The number of dead pigs retrieved from waters in and near China’s financial hub of Shanghai has reached 12,566 after local authorities plucked 611 pig carcasses Saturday from the Huangpu River […]

In total, 8,965 dead pigs have been found in the river since March 8 and another 3,601 in waterways in the upstream city of Jiaxing, where small hog farms are prevalent.

Most of the swollen and rotting pigs recovered in Shanghai are believed to have originated from Jiaxing. The head veterinarian for China’s Agriculture Ministry said some of the carcasses tested positive for the common porcine circovirus and the epidemic diarrhea virus.
