McCain Responds to News That Assad Still Has 95 Percent of His WMD Stockpile

Sen. John McCain (R., Ariz.) tore into the Obama administration over its Syria policy Thursday, calling out his failure to hold Bashar al-Assad to account for removing less than five percent of his chemical weapons and saying the U.S. is viewed as "weak" by the rest of the world.

The U.S. government slammed Syria Thursday, saying it is purposefully stalling in removing its chemical weapons stockpiles as previously agreed.

McCain mocked the administration's initial claim that Syria's weapons were going to be eliminated with diplomacy and the threat of force.

"President Bashar Assad's government has delivered less than 5 percent of its deadliest chemical weapons agents," he said. "The deadline is next week. So even this claim about chemical weapons being removed does not bear scrutiny."

McCain also noted Obama's empty claim that Assad would inevitably be removed from power, asking, "Does anybody believe that now?"
