A man is on the run in Barcelona after ploughing a large van onto a crowded sidewalk in the city's central Las Ramblas district, killing two people and injuring several others, according to authorities in Spain.

Police said the incident is being treated as a terrorist attack.

Police cordoned off the broad pedestrian street that runs through the area, ordering nearby subway and train stations to shutdown. The area is popular among locals and tourists for its bustling markets, restaurants, and shops.

The U.S. Consulate in Barcelona and the State Department both issued advisories on twitter encouraging Americans to avoid the area.
