A Democrat county auditor in Iowa is under investigation by state campaign ethics officials over allegations that he used public funds and staff to promote his reelection campaign.
The Indy Star reports:
[Johnson County Auditor Tom] Slockett, a Democrat and the county auditor since 1976, is accused of circulating and pressuring his staff to sign his re-election petition, sending campaign-related email and taking campaign calls from the office.
It is illegal in Iowa to use a public office for political purposes.
The complaint was filed by Nathan Reckman, an employee who resigned Monday. The Iowa Ethics and Campaign Disclosure Board agreed in a closed session to investigate the allegations further.
