Haley Says Trump Supports Her Taking on Russia at UN

April 2, 2017

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley implied Sunday that President Donald Trump supports her efforts to take on Russia at the U.N.

Haley appeared on ABC's "This Week" and told host Martha Raddatz that she and Trump have the same message for Moscow but the media is reporting it differently.

Raddatz asked Haley why Trump has not spoken more forcefully about Russia, prompting Haley to answer that she has not been stopped from being critical of the Kremlin at the U.N.

"Well, Martha, this is what I can tell you: the president has not once called me and said, 'Don't beat up on Russia,' has not once called me and told me what to say," Haley said.

Haley also said that human rights will be a major focus of her agenda as she becomes temporary president of the U.N. Security Council.

"We called them out on what they did with Ukraine," Haley said. "We're having this human rights hearing."

"This is not about keeping countries happy; this is about keeping the United States strong, and in order to do that, we have to have the backs of our allies, we have to call out wrongs when we see them, we have to try and move policy in the world, and that's what we're doing at the United Nations," Haley continued.

"It's a new day at the United Nations in the way that we're not afraid to talk, we're going to say what we think, and we're going to move the ball," she added.
