Haley: Only Surprises Will Be to International Community, Not Congress

April 9, 2017

United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley defended President Donald Trump on Sunday, saying that he  worked closely with his Cabinet and leaders in Congress before ordering a missile strike at a Syrian airfield on Thursday in response to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's use of chemical weapons on Syrian civilians.

Some have criticized the administration for ordering the strikes without Congressional approval, but Haley told CNN's Jake Tapper that Congress would always be kept informed.

"If you're confident that the Assad regime was behind this chemical weapon attack and the possibility of further military action is there, should the Trump administration lay out the evidence, come to Congress and get the specific authorization to use force?" Tapper asked.

Haley complimented the military for how they handled the strike, and stressed that senior administration officials were in touch with members of Congress and the Cabinet.

"Well, it depends on the action, but I can tell you that he worked very closely with the leaders in Congress, all of the Cabinet members," Haley said.

"I think that's what you're going to see this administration do," Haley continued. "The only surprises are going to be to the international community but we're going to focus on working with everybody."
