Hagel: US Intelligence Does Not Suggest Chemical Weapon Use in Syria

Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel told reporters in Cairo that US intelligence does not support Israeli intelligence that chemical weapons have been used in Syria's civil war Wednesday.

"Suspicions are one thing, evidence is another. I think we have to be very careful before we draw any conclusions based on real intelligence. That's not at all questioning other nation's intelligence, but the United States relies on its own intelligence," Hagel said.

Israel declared earlier this week that it has evidence that proves chemical weapons were used in Syria last month. France and Britain have also expressed suspicions that Assad has used chemical weapons against his own people.

The Obama administration has repeatedly said that the use of chemical weapons would cross a "redline" that would require additional measures to aid the Syrian rebels.
