The man who flew his gyrocopter to the United States Capitol to protest money in politics has been sentenced to 120 days in prison.

Roll Call reports that the pilot, Doug Hughes, pled guilty to flying without a license.

Hughes, who is from Florida, took off in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and flew through Maryland and Washington, D.C. to the West Front of the Capitol last April, where he was arrested immediately by the U.S. Capitol Police Department.

It is illegal to fly into DC without proper authorization due to security and safety reasons. Hughes also never communicated with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).

Hughes has stated that his flight was a protest against money in politics. He has also acknowledged that there was a good chance that he would be killed during his flight by authorities.

In addition to his jail sentence, Hughes will have one year of supervised release.

Hughes was attempting to run for the Democratic nomination for a seat in the United States House of Representatives. That seat, however, is currently occupied by Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D., Fla.), who is expected to easily retain it. Schultz is also the Chairwoman of the Democratic National Committee.
