CCTV Captures Suspected Killer of American Teacher at UAE Mall

'The Reem Island Ghost'

December 3, 2014

Police in Abu Dhabi released surveillance video Wednesday showing the suspected murderer of a female American teacher fleeing the scene at a mall on Al Reem Island.

Abu Dhabi police confirmed that the American woman was taken to Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, where she died from her stab wounds. The woman, identified as 47-year-old Ibolya Ryan, was a mother of 11-year-old twins.

The tape shows the suspect, now deemed the 'Reem Island Ghost,' entering the mall with what appears to be a kitchen knife. The suspect then enters a public restroom and flees shortly after, with witnesses pointing and trying to stop him (or her) from exiting the mall.

The video then shows a close up of the crime scene: a restroom floor covered in bloody footsteps, a discarded large knife.

Ryan's killer was wearing a full-body robe, or abayah, which kept his or her face concealed from cameras and potential witnesses.

"The police are investigating to uncover the crime’s causes and motives and to arrest the culprit," Abu Dhabi police Col. Rashid Mohammad Borshid said.

"The Community Police will be providing the children with shelter and other needs pending the arrival of their father (the victim’s ex-husband) from abroad. The father will be received by the Community Police, who will also cater to the needs of the victim’s family."

Two days before the attack, the U.S. Embassy in Abu Dhabi issued a warning that an anonymous web posting had urged attacks against American teachers.
