CBS: D-Day Commemoration Serves As 'Powerful Testament to the Sacrifices of War'

CBS This Morning reported on the 70th anniversary of the historic D-Day invasion of Europe Friday, with reporter Bill Plante remarking the cemetery there serves as a "powerful testament to the sacrifices of war."

Those still living that made it through Operation Overlord are now in or approaching their 90s.

World leaders, including President Obama and Queen Elizabeth II, were on hand with veterans and Normandy residents to pay tribute to those who participated in history's largest amphibious invasion that turned the tide of World War II.

"We've come to remember why America and their allies gave so much for the survival of liberty at this moment of maximum peril," Obama said.

The struggle for freedom continues, Plante said, and that marked the theme of Obama's address saluting those who fought.

"These men waged war so that we might know peace," Obama said. "They sacrificed so that we might be free. They fought in hopes there'd be a day with no longer need to fight. We are grateful to them."
