BPD Commissioner Edward Davis: Lack of Information Sharing is Dangerous

July 10, 2013

Boston Police Commissioner Edward Davis implored members of the Senate for a mandate that enforces information sharing between federal and local agencies in front of the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Wednesday morning.

Davis' request for an information-sharing mandate comes nearly three months after two improvised explosive devices detonated at the finish line of the Boston Marathon, killing three people and wounding hundreds more.

Reports emerged shortly after the attacks that the FBI had information on the suspects that they had not shared with the Boston Police Department.

Davis repeated a number of times that the lack of information sharing between the FBI and local offices is dangerous.

"It is a risk that I take very seriously," Davis said.

Davis went on to repeat a request that there be a mandate to force federal agencies to disseminate terrorist threats to local law enforcement agencies if the threat pertains to a certain city.

The committee's main focus was to discuss lessons learned from the bombing. Representatives from FEMA, the RAND Corporation, and the Department of Homeland Security were all in attendance. However, Davis fielded a majority of the questions.
