Andrea Mitchell: Obama Has 'Credibility Problem' Claiming Progress Against Islamic State

January 20, 2015

Prior to the State of the Union address, MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell admitted that President Obama's remarks tonight on combatting the Islamic State would give him a "credibility problem."

In released sections of the President's State of the Union address, the President will be asking Congress for authorization for active force to combat the growth and spread of ISIL.

"It's really hard to see what the progress has been against ISIS in Syria for sure, and in Iraq," she said. "He will say there is now a government in Iraq and that there is a more secular government in Iraq, a more inclusive government in Iraq. But to claim progress against ISIS and against terrorism, especially on a day when Yemen is fraught with the possibility of collapse and we've got a new hostage video from ISIS with Japanese hostages, is really hard to fathom."

Both Democrats and Republicans have said that there should be more action done to fight the spread of ISIL. The airstrikes that started over three months ago have not done anything to stop the spread of ISIL.
