ABC: Much Of What the White House Initially Said About Bergdahl 'Is Now In Question'

Much of what the Obama administration originally claimed about its controversial decision to trade Taliban commanders for the release of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl "is now in question," ABC's Jonathan Karl reported Tuesday night.

First, there's Bergdahl himself, Karl said, playing the clip of Susan Rice praising him for serving with "honor and distinction." However, news broke Tuesday that the Army is preparing to investigate Bergdahl for deserting. Many who served alongside Bergdahl have publicly stated Bergdahl deserted his post, with one saying he sought communications with the Taliban even before his capture.

Also, White House rhetoric on the danger of the Taliban commanders who were freed in the deal has changed overnight.

Monday, White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said, "The transfer of these detainees did not pose a significant threat to the United States."

Obama himself struck a different tone Tuesday.

"Is there the possibility of some of them trying to return to activities that are detrimental to us? Absolutely," he said.

For all the criticism about the deal, Karl said top advisors at the White House told him that the trade was "an easy call."
