The Washington Free Beacon's Ellison Barber appeared on Happening Now Tuesday to discuss her article rebutting a New York Times editorial accusing Republicans of having disdain for the jobless through not renewing unemployment benefits.
Barber wrote that repeatedly extending government entitlements did nothing to address the larger problem of unemployment gripping the country, and she was asked to address that again Tuesday.
"It feels good to say yes, I voted to extend unemployment [benefits] and here's some money for you," she said. "But really, it's not a solution at all. Just putting a check at something does nothing to solve the underlying problem of unemployment. The reality is this program has been in existence for five years where we have been extending it and just adding more money to it. It hasn't done anything to fix the long-term unemployment ... It's more than it was before."
