WaPo's Jennifer Rubin on Keystone XL Pipeline

Obama 'hard-pressed to do nothing' following State Dept. report

As the energy community awaits the State Department’s newest report on the Keystone XL Pipeline, Washington Post blogger Jennifer Rubin predicted that the report would find the pipeline environmentally safe, leaving President Obama "hard-pressed to do nothing."

Speaking on environmental groups’ opposition to the project, Rubin said, "You would think they would be happy if the government not once but twice confirmed there is no environmental problem. That is what they are concerned about. But there is no amount of science or evidence that will satisfy those groups."

Rubin noted that while Obama will want to keep the environmental activists – a key element of the Democratic base – happy, the pipeline is widely popular among the American people, even the Democratic heavyweights of Big Labor.

"I think he will have to go forward," Rubin concluded. "After getting a couple clean bills of health from his own State Department he will be under a lot of pressure to move ahead."
