The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advised pregnant women Friday to avoid travel to Miami-Dade County after Florida officials identified a second area where the Zika virus is spreading locally.
Republican Gov. Rick Scott confirmed Friday that five cases of Zika were contracted in a portion of Miami Beach that includes popular tourist destination South Beach.
Three men and two women were infected, including two Florida residents and three visitors who have returned home to Texas, New York, and Taiwan.
The total number of locally transmitted cases in Florida is now 36.
Scott called on the CDC earlier this month to activate its emergency response team to assist Florida’s health department in containing mosquitos and investigating the spread of the virus.
