More than a week after airing a heavily edited 911 tape that cast George Zimmerman in a negative light, NBC has admitted its mistake and apologized.
The NBC report featured a 911 call placed by Zimmerman to police on the night he fatally shot 17-year-old Trayvon Martin. NBC edited the tape to make it appear as if Zimmerman had said Martin "looks black" without first being prompted by a dispatcher.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports on the apology:
In a statement on Tuesday, NBC said its investigation turned up "an error made in the production process that we deeply regret." It provided no details.
The network promised "necessary steps" would be taken "to prevent this from happening in the future," and apologized to viewers.
