A nonprofit group is suing Harvard University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill for admission policies that discriminate against Asian American students, Business Insider reports.

The lawsuit, filed by Students for Fair Admissions, says Harvard and UNC both have affirmative action policies that hurt the chances of admission for Asian Americans. In Harvard’s case, the lawsuit claims its policy is intentionally limiting the number of Asians admitted to the school.

"Students for Fair Admission's complaint highlights data and analysis that strongly suggests that white, African-American, and Hispanic applicants are given racial preferences over better qualified Asian-Americans applying for admission to Harvard," the group said in a press release.

Both schools defended their admissions policies, saying they are fully compliant with federal law.
