Maryland Governor Praises School Resource Officer Response: 'This Is a Tough Guy,' Took 'Right Kind of Action'

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan (R.) spoke at a press conference in the wake of a school shooting on Tuesday where he praised the school resource officer who engaged the attacker.

A reporter asked Hogan if he thought the way the school resource officer responded to the shooting at Great Mills High School should be an example for school districts across the country.

"We are just getting all the facts, but I had the opportunity to talk to Sheriff Cameron, and it sure sounds like this is exactly the way this is how it should have been handled," the governor responded.

"This is a tough guy who apparently closed in very quickly and took the right kind of action," Hogan added. "While it's still tragic, he may have saved other people's lives."

St. Mary's County Sheriff Tim Cameron said it took "seconds" for the school resource officer, Blaine Gaskill, to respond to the shooting.

Officials reported late Tuesday morning that the attacker, who shot two students, died after being brought to the hospital. CNN reports that a 16-year-old shooting victim is in critical condition with life-threatening injuries. A 14-year-old male student victim is in stable condition.
