Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan will visit the White House on Tuesday to meet with President Donald Trump.

"The two leaders will discuss how to further strengthen our bilateral relationship and deepen our cooperation to confront terrorism in all its forms," the White House said in a statement.

Erdogan's visit comes amid rising tensions with Turkey. The United States has announced that it will increase support for Kurdish YPG fighters who are fighting the Islamic State in Syria, but Turkey has considered the YPG closely tied to the Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, a U.S.-designated terrorist organization that has been in conflict with Ankara.

The 2016 attempted coup in Turkey against Erdogan also heightened tensions, with the Turkish president accusing the United States of supporting coup leaders. Additionally, a recent referendum in Turkey has granted more powers to Erdogan, a move that deeply divided the country.

Turkey's status as a NATO ally has been recently debated by some amid Erdogan's internal crackdown and increasing ties with Russia in recent months.
