Editor's Note: On Thursday, the Washington Free Beacon published a piece about a police report that details a harassing phone call Rep. Gabe Vasquez (D., N.M.) made to his former employer while enrolled at New Mexico State University.
According to the report, Vasquez was fired from a call center in Las Cruces for falsifying data and proceeded to call the center, asking for "Chris." When a human resources staffer asked Vasquez to clarify which Chris he was referring to, Vasquez responded, "Chris, the n—er," the report states. Vasquez called back and asked for "Chris, the black man" before the staffer alerted police.
The Free Beacon obtained the report through a public records request to the city of Las Cruces seeking documents that included Vasquez's name and date of birth. Though Vasquez's name was redacted in the report, a records custodian for the city told the Free Beacon that the suspect identified in the report is Vasquez and subsequently denied a request for the unredacted report "simply due to your position that you already know the contents."
Vasquez did not respond to the Free Beacon's request for comment at the time. He later denied using the racial slur, telling Politico he "would never use language like this" before accusing his Republican opponent of "wanting to ban all abortion."
The Free Beacon has since obtained the unredacted police report, which names Vasquez as the suspect behind the harassing calls. It can be viewed in full below.
