When he was 18 years old, Jimmie Turpin dropped out of high school to join the fight in Vietnam. More than 50 years later, he returned to collect his diploma, KHOU reported.

"It's amazing," Turpin said. "I'm just floored."

Alvin ISD honored the Vietnam veteran with a high school diploma.

His family in tears watched as the now 72-year-old grandfather even got a letterman's jacket and a standing ovation.

"Nobody could script this," he said. "This is my life. I'm now an official alum."

In an incredible turn of events Turpin actually graduated from high school the same day as his granddaughter.

He will walk the stage at Alvin High School's commencement on June 5. His granddaughter Julia will walk the stage earlier that at Pearland High School's ceremony.

The family says they will be able to make both. The timing worked out perfectly.
