Luke Russert, son of the late Meet the Press moderator Tim Russert, suddenly announced on Wednesday that he will leave NBC News "to pursue other interests."

The departure comes just days before the Republican National Convention is scheduled to start in Cleveland, with the Democratic National Convention beginning the following week.

Russert released a statement via Twitter:

Russert joined NBC in 2008, shortly after his father passed away. Tim Russert was the host of Meet the Press for 16 years and was one of the most well-known journalists in America.

The younger Russert’s departure came as a surprise to many, especially since he said his last day with NBC will be Friday, July 15.

Russert was a Capitol Hill correspondent and appeared on many NBC and MSNBC programs, sometimes filling in as a guest host.
