NBC’s Tonight Show host Jay Leno poked fun at the NSA’s surveillance of foreign leaders during his opening monologue Tuesday night.

"And German Chancellor Angela Merkel furious the NSA tapped her private cell phone. And yesterday White House Press Secretary, Jay Carney announced that the White House did not use its surveillance of foreign governments for any economic purposes. Or any economic gain. And maybe it should have. We would have learned something about running an economy properly. Wouldn't be in this mess. Why don't we do that?"

Leno also noted that due to the many problems the country faces, it is time for self-examination:

"I tell you, a lot of things -- a lot of things going on in this country right now. This is really a time for self-examination for all Americans. We have to learn to examine ourselves. You know why? 'Cause it doesn't look like we'll get any decent health care."
