Ellison Barber Hits Back on Gawker's Attack on Seinfeld

February 5, 2014

The Washington Free Beacon's Ellison Barber fired back at Gawker's claim that Jerry Seinfeld is only interested in featuring white comedians on his new web series during an appearance on Fox News' Red Eye.

Seinfeld in a BuzzFeed interview was asked why he features so many white men on his series. Seinfeld responded "People think [comedy] is the census or something, it's gotta represent the actual pie chart of America. Who cares? It's just funny. Funny is the world that I live in. You're funny, I'm interested. You're not funny, I'm not interested."

Gawker chose to interpret Seinfeld's answer as racist and painted him as advocating for whites-only comedy. Gawker wrote: "Jerry Seinfeld, the most successful comedian in the world and maker of comedy for and about white people, isn't interested in trying to include non-white anything in his work."

Barber weighed in on the controversy, telling Greg Gutfeld:

"The idea that you have to have a certain amount of people of this race or that race to be putting out a quality product is ridiculous...It doesn't benefit the product or any individual trying to be successful by putting these standards of diversity on anything."
