Carney Can't Say if New Assistance Has Arrived for Syrian Rebels

White House spokesman Jay Carney couldn't give a specific answer as to what aid the Obama administration had provided the Syrian rebels after pledging military assistance in June:

REPORTER: Back to Syria for a second. Can you tell us, any assistance that is in the hands of the rebels at this point in the last months and what it is beyond rhetorical --

JAY CARNEY: I think I just said we're not going to detail all types of assistance we will provide, and that's the case. If you are asking has new assistance arrived, I would refer you to the Defense Department about the assistance programs that they oversee, or the State Department about the assistance programs that they oversee. The fact is we're working with Congress on the issue of the president's announcement of enhanced military assistance. But I don't have anything about the specific shipments to provide to you.

REPORTER: Can you say yes or no? Any kind of assistance is in Syria?

CARNEY: Well we've been providing assistance to Syria, including the Syrian military council, for some time now. So the answer is yes, there is and has been.
