I suppose it's wrong to implicitly compare Wes Anderson's latest film—which I will almost certainly enjoy and which will, in all likelihood, crack my 2014 Top Ten—to a notorious Civil War prison camp. But I figured my friend Victor Morton—arguably the world's biggest Wes Anderson fan—would get a kick out of this headline.
Anyway, the trailer for his latest is out. Two thoughts, after the trailer/jump:
My two thoughts:
- Wow, that is super Wes Andersony! Even more so than The Royal Tenenbaums, his best work and a film high in the running for Best of the Aughts.
- It appears that the film is shot in 1.33:1, which you will fondly remember as the standard size of television screens in the way way back, before HD and 16x9 televisions. I don't know exactly what to make of it. But I'm excited to see how he uses the boxier ratio to frame his shots. I imagine each shot will be even more like a Joseph Cornell Box than usual, crammed with meticulously placed details and all sorts of other goodies.
