Thailand’s military seized power two weeks ago and has been hard at work soothing over the tension that accompanies a country’s military pointing its guns at the government and people.
The WSJ reports:
Thailand's military junta is trying to make Thais happy about the latest coup, trotting out saluting young women in risqué camouflage outfits and hosting street parties with free food and music.
Since taking power in a coup d'état two weeks ago, the military has tried to smooth over nearly a decade of deep political divisions and win support for its new mandate, which it sees as a necessary first step toward kick-starting Thailand's sputtering economy.
Don't think the military is just rolling out scantily clad ladies in fatigues, though.
They've set up reconciliation centers for Thais to visit, and are throwing street parties right out of Dave Chappelle's Block Party. General Prayuth Chan-ocha could probably even book Erykah Badu for these parties too. Erykah will perform anywhere.
This is the best-looking P.R. campaign ever rolled out by a military junta.
But it’s also propaganda. Bleh.
The Thai coup: Trouble in paradise.
