My must read of the day is "Chris Christie and Jimmy Fallon Perform ‘The Evolution of Dad Dancing'" in New York Magazine:
Though there are still multiple ongoing investigations into the George Washington Bridge scandal, Chris Christie has decided it's okay for him to laugh about Bridgegate. The New Jersey governor ended his self-imposed exile from late-night television on Thursday with an appearance on The Tonight Show. In a companion piece to Michelle Obama's "Evolution of Mom Dancing," the noticeably slimmer Christie showed off a few classic dad moves. (Naturally, there was a Springsteen joke.) Later when Fallon asked Christie if he thinks he can beat Hillary Clinton in 2016, he answered "Hypothetically, you bet." "In a dance off?" Fallon asked. "That’s what I was talking about. What were you talking about?" said Christie.
Maybe this just irks me because I don't think it's funny in general, but I also think if I was Christie's PR team I would have strongly advised him not to do this.
Sorry to be an old curmudgeon, but I really don't want a potential president on video doing this dance. It weirds me out, and I can't stop replaying my mental gif of the "belt grabber" and the "back it up."
That person is not the one I want deciding whether or not we go to war.
Yes, Michelle Obama did the "mom version" of this dance, but she's not a potential presidential candidate. She can get away with this stuff and it seems lighthearted and charming (also, I think it’s obvious she has slightly more rhythm than Christie). It's unbecoming of someone who wants to be taken seriously as a presidential contender—so actually, I'm not sorry to be an old curmudgeon on this. This dance was a terrible, unfunny idea and Christie looked like an idiot all two minutes and thirty-three seconds.
