Door-to-door Alcohol Delivery Comes to Washington

Residents of Washington, D.C., can now order beer, wine, and spirits from an online service and have it delivered to their doorstep within an hour.

Finally, an idea that Republicans and Democrats can all get behind (not sure about Bernie Sanders; he's from Vermont.)

The Washington Post reports on the service provided by a company called Ultra that allows consumers to avoid the burden of walking a few blocks and going into a liquor store to get their Wild Turkey.

The startup already offers deliveries in New York and Chicago, and it's now expanding to the District, where it officially debuts Thursday in select neighborhoods, including Dupont Circle, Logan Circle, Georgetown, Adams Morgan, Cleveland Park, Woodley Park, Capitol Hill, Bloomingdale, and others.

Obviously, what's good for New York and Chicago is clearly good enough for the nation's capital, I'm just shocked the concept didn't debut here.  After all, Washington is the drunkest city in America when it comes to wine consumption, based on a recent study.

No doubt plenty of politicians, lobbyists, staffers, and journalists help fuel that championship performance and isn't it better for those paragons of the American Republic to not have to deal with the embarrassment of heading out for a beer run?

For all you tea-totalers who may shrink at the idea of making it more convenient to access alcohol, stop a moment and really consider the great service Ultra is providing. Washingtonians who have sipped their last drop of booze but still need a night cap won't be getting behind the wheel and endangering pedestrians (or national monuments) by driving under the influence. This service keeps them safe in their Georgetown townhouses, where they can do less damage.

Imagine if Ultra was around when Ted Kennedy was in town. Or Patrick Kennedy. Or Kerry Kennedy. Or ... well ... just Google "Kennedy DUI."  You get the picture.
