Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand (D., N.Y.) on Tuesday said that she would be endorsing New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D.) in his bid to be re-elected governor over his Democratic challenger, Cynthia Nixon.

Gillibrand, a longtime friend of Cuomo, told Politico that Cuomo has had some major accomplishments on various progressive issues such as gay marriage and paid leave in the state.

"Gov. Cuomo and I are friends. But he also has done some amazing things for New York, such as passing paid leave in our state, passing marriage equality and working to end sexual violence on our college campuses," Gillibrand said.

She was also asked whether her Democratic colleague Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) would be supporting Cuomo's re-election, prompting her to reply, "You'll have to ask him. I'm sure he'll do the same."

Cuomo and Gillibrand have been floated as potential 2020 contenders for president, despite Cuomo repeatedly dodging questions about his presidential aspirations.

The primary is scheduled for September 13.
