NBC's "Late Night" host Seth Meyers slammed House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) on Monday night for her "shockingly tone deaf" defense of sexual harassment allegations against Democratic Rep. John Conyers (Mich.) made a day earlier.
"For example, yesterday House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi was asked about Michigan Congressman John Conyers, who secretly settled sexual harassment allegations by a former employee and her answer was shockingly tone deaf," Meyers said.
Meyers played multiple soundbites from Pelosi's interview with NBC's "Meet the Press" host Chuck Todd on Sunday.
He then pushed back against Pelosi for dodging Todd's question about whether the "right thing" is for Conyers to resign.
"He will do the right thing in terms of what he knows about his situation," Pelosi said.
Meyers disagreed.
"No," Meyers said. "He's in this position because he allegedly did the wrong thing. You can't say the guy who did that wrong thing will do the right thing."
The comedian went on to say it doesn't matter that Conyers is an "icon," and "if anything it makes things worse."
"I am an icon is like a sexual harasser's catch phrase, 'Hey, I know that you haven't consented to any of this, but I am an icon,'" Meyers said.
With those words, the photos of Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, Kevin Spacey, Louis C.K., Charlie Rose, and Bill O’Reilly appeared on the screen. All six influential figures have recently been accused of sexual misconduct.
Pelosi released a statement on Monday evening after meeting with one of Conyers' accusers where she backtracked from her original defense and called his behavior ‘unacceptable and disappointing.’
