Before she sang Tuesday night at the Democratic National Convention, performing artist Alicia Keys said the United States could not claim to be the "home of the brave" until it dealt with gun violence.
"Women are the answer. We have the power to ensure that this country gets on the right path," Keys said. "I dedicate this song to the Mothers of the Movement and all mothers who have lost their sons and their daughters to senseless violence. Until we deal with gun violence in this country, we can’t claim home of the brave."
"Home of the brave" is the concluding lyric of America’s national anthem. Keys then went into her performance of "Superwoman."
Among Tuesday night’s convention speakers were women whose children had died as a result of gun violence or altercations with law enforcement. Democrats, led by presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, have made gun control and criminal justice reform two of the cornerstones of their 2016 platform.
