Maryland Man Charged With Supporting ISIS, Lying to FBI

December 14, 2015

Another man living in the U.S. has been arrested for trying to support ISIS, the terrorist group that claimed responsibility for the Paris terror attacks last month.

The Washington Post reported:

A Maryland man has been charged with providing material support to the Islamic State [ISIS] and lying to the FBI, according to U.S. law enforcement officials. Mohamed Yousef ElShinawy, 30, of Edgewood was arrested Friday afternoon at his home. Officials said he was communicating with Islamic State terrorists overseas who sent him money to carry out a possible attack or to travel to Syria. ElShinawy is expected to be arraigned Monday in federal court. A Justice Department spokesman declined to comment on the details of the case. It was not clear Monday whether ElShinawy has retained an attorney.

Federal officials have made multiple arrests related to ISIS in recent months. Last week, a 20-year-old man was arrested in Minneapolis and charged with conspiring to provide material support to ISIS. He was part of a group of 10 Somali men from the Minneapolis-Saint Paul area who plotted to join the terrorist group in Syria.

ISIS is also believed to have inspired the attack on a holiday party in San Bernardino, California,  that killed 14 people earlier this month. The attackers, both of whom died in a shootout with police, were both supporters of ISIS, the terror group has claimed. Federal investigators have also found that the pair had been radicalized for some time.

Concerns about terrorism have increased among U.S. citizens in the wake of the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino. Americans are most likely to name terrorism as the top problem facing the United States today, according to a Gallup poll released Monday.
