Former president Bill Clinton referenced Washington Free Beacon reporting in an interview that aired Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union.
"There's such a trust deficit in America today," Clinton said. "Somebody jumped on the New York Times because they accepted a contribution from our family foundation. Did you see that?"
"Yeah," host Jake Tapper said.
Clinton claimed the donation had "nothing to do with anything." The Free Beacon reported that the Clinton Family Foundation donated $100,000 to a New York Times charity as Hillary Clinton sought the Democratic nomination for president, the only donation the foundation made to that well connected charity.
The Times ultimately endorsed Clinton.
