A tree planted by President Barack Obama last month in India has lost all of its leaves and is about to die due to neglect, according to an India Today report.
The tree was planted by Obama at a memorial to Mahatma Gandhi in New Delhi on Jan. 25 and has lost all of its leaves just three weeks later.
The gardener at the memorial says that the fallen leaves are due to changing weather, but India Today reports that signs indicate that the demise is "probably due to lack of proper care."
The neglectful treatment of the tree, a sapling of the species Ficus Religiosa, began at the ceremony, according to the Washington Post.
Though Obama was supposed to plant the tree himself, it was already placed in the ground when he arrived at the ceremony, according to the report.
Obama "spread dirt around the sapling and watered it with a pitcher."
He then talked to the plant, reportedly saying "big and strong."
