Sen. Mary Landrieu (D., La.), incorrectly referred to Louisiana’s "counties" Tuesday during the Louisiana Senate debate. Louisiana is divided into 64 "parishes," not counties.
"Your zip code shouldn’t determine your future--what parish or county you’re born in," Landrieu said in regard to improving education.
The gaffe reflected Landrieu's lack of familiarity with her "home" state.
Landrieu has been repeatedly criticized for not living in Louisiana, the state she has represented in the U.S. Senate since 1997. Landrieu uses the New Orleans home she grew up in and now in-part owns along with her mother and siblings, as her established residency and justification for representing Louisiana.
Questions of Landrieu’s residency were raised earlier this year, as the senator spends most of her time with her husband in a $2.5 million brick home on Capitol Hill.
Landrieu trails her opponent, Republican Rep. Bill Cassidy, by five points.
