Kurds Hold Off ISIL Advance Near Syria-Turkey Border

Kurdish forces managed to slow an advance by the Islamic State of Iraq and Levant (ISIL or ISIS) near the Syrian-Turkish border Friday evening local time.

CNN correspondent Phil Black reported at the scene, where Kurdish refugees cheered on their brethren as ISIL fighters took casualties.

Black said ISIL has been making significant advances into the mostly Kurdish region of northern Syria over the past week, prompting refugees to appeal to coalition forces to come to their aid.

Black said he believes ISIL fighters have been driven closer to the Syrian-Turkish border as coalition airstrikes drive them out of areas near Aleppo.

Around 200,000 refugees have fled from Syria over the past week.
