The Washington Free Beacon’s Ellison Barber appeared on Fox News to discuss the incriminating emails between Lois Lerner and Rep. Elijah Cummings (D., Md.) that show the pair possibly colluded to bring True the Vote to the IRS’ attention.
On Wednesday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.) accused Cummings of colluding with the IRS to target the conservative nonprofit group, True the Vote. The founder of the nonprofit, Catherine Engelbrecht, previously testified before a subcommittee that she was pressed by Cummings’ office and the IRS for information.
Engelbrecht’s attorney suggested that Cummings’ office might have been partially responsible for putting True the Vote on the IRS’ radar. Issa’s investigation found emails showing that a member of Cummings’ staff contacted the IRS requesting any publicly available information about True the Vote.
Despite the accusations, Cummings has maintained that the True the Vote investigation "was not a politically charged thing," and that "there was no conspiracy to target conservative groups," Barber explained.
