Cantor Speaks in Favor of the Ukraine Support Act

'We need a new strategy that understands Putin for who he is, not who we wish him to be'

House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-VA) took to the floor Thursday to urge passage of the Ukraine Support Act, a bipartisan bill that condemns Vladimir Putin’s annexation of Crimea and places economic sanctions on Russia.

Cantor said that with the eyes of the world on the United States and its E.U. and NATO allies, the bill represents a first step towards supporting Ukraine and imposing a significant cost on Moscow.

"But it is only a first step," Cantor warned. "We must fundamentally reassess our assumptions about Russia and acknowledge that Putin himself scrapped the administration's reset policy a long time ago."

Said Cantor, "We need a new strategy that understands Putin for who he is, not who we wish him to be."
