Barber Assesses GOP Strategy for Midterm Elections

February 18, 2014

The Washington Free Beacon’s Ellison Barber appeared on Fox News’ Happening Now to discuss the GOP's strategy for the upcoming midterm elections.

Jon Scott noted that Republicans have said they will refrain from writing big legislation. Barber responded to this report, telling Scott that, "Their philosophy has tended to be…’It’s better to just kind of let things sit back, let the focus stay on the Affordable Care Act, and we’ll go forward from there, but why give anyone else kind of fodder to attack us on anything else when we already know that things like immigration reform- that’s not going to pass anyway, so let’s just sit this out."

The House GOP plans to pass many smaller bills, she said. Those smaller bills will be more legislative issues that their constituents will care about.

The GOP strategy is to keep the House and pick up the six seats in the Senate that are needed to take control of it. The seats up for grabs are currently occupied by "vulnerable Democrats"- like Kay Hagan, Mary Landrieu, and Mark Pryor. Republicans "don’t want to stir up too much trouble to where Obamacare stays the focus and they can hammer those Democrats on that point," Barber said.
