The House passed the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act on Tuesday, which would ban federal insurance subsidies under the Affordable Care Act to be used to purchase plans that cover abortion.
The bill passed by a vote of 227-188 and received support from six democrats, according to Politico Pro.
Six Democrats joined Republicans Tuesday to approve the measure, which was offered by Rep. Chris Smith. The bill would ban subsidies from being used to buy plans that cover abortions except in the cases of rape, incest or when the mother’s life is in danger. It would also make permanent the Hyde amendment and several other policies that have long restricted federal funding for abortion.
The White House has said President Obama would be advised to veto the legislation if it reached his desk. That’s unlikely since the Senate doesn’t plan to take it up. Tuesday’s vote represented the 50th time the House has moved to repeal or change some part of the health care law.
