Doug Burgum Injured While Shooting Hoops, May Miss GOP Debate He Paid Millions To Qualify For

August 23, 2023

Republican presidential candidate and North Dakota governor Doug Burgum may miss the GOP presidential debate on Wednesday night after suffering an injury during a game of pick-up basketball on Tuesday.

Burgum went to an emergency room Tuesday night for a leg injury and was discharged by Wednesday morning. His campaign told Fox News that it remains "unclear if he will be able to stand at the debate."

The unlucky break for the governor comes after he spent $10 million of his personal money to boost his campaign. The wealthy former Microsoft executive spent more than $700,000 on a scheme to qualify for the debate—he gave anyone who donated at least $1 to his campaign a $20 gift card in return. Candidates need 40,000 unique donors to their campaign to make it on the stage.

Candidates participating in the Milwaukee debate are expected to participate in a walk-through of the venue. It is unclear whether Burgum will participate.
